I ride my bicycle at night and didn't want to take any chances with visibility, so I installed the headlight (white) and tail light (red) versions of the CatEye 570. These are some of the only lights on the market that satisfy the CPSC's reflector standard, making them good enough to replace your bike's original reflectors. If you don't believe that passive reflectors, let alone active lights, are necessary, park your bike at night, walk away, shine a flashlight on the bike, and see how your bike would look to a driver. Perform this experiment for the left side, right side, front and back. What I found is that even in passive reflector mode (power off), my CatEye 570 headlight and tail light were the most obvious parts of my bike at a distance.
At first, I was skeptical about the automatic feature, which activates the lights when both of the following conditions are met: 1. darkness and 2. motion. After doing more city riding, I changed my mind. When I ride through a tunnel or a freeway underpass during the day, my lights come on without my having had to prepare in advance.
I also had doubts about durability. I've returned a lot of lights, some of which broke the first time that the cases were opened. Any doubts about the CatEye 570 vanished when I accidentally dropped both of my lights onto a concrete sidewalk, from a height of about 4 feet. The cases opened and the batteries came out, but once I had put everything back together, the lights were little the worse for wear. Way to go, CatEye!
On a separate note, CatEye offers a wide variety of mounting options. Check out the "Small Parts Store" on the CatEye Web site, browse Amazon.com, or place a special order through your local bike shop, to obtain brackets for handlebars and head or seat tubes of different diameters; a nifty rear rack mount (L-brackets also work); and a strong and versatile clothing clip. If you often ride with bags, baskets, or bulky cargo, consider putting additional mounts on your bag or basket. I was able to use the clothing clip, plus some plastic zip ties, to add a mount to the front face of my removable basket. I used nylon screws to attach the rear rack mount to the rear face of my bag. This way, no matter which accessories I am carrying, I can hang my lights prominently.
Final note: these lights are for being seen, not seeing. The headlight (white) version does not replace a headlight with a focused beam, necessary for seeing traffic signs and monitoring the road surface for debris.
