Original Review:
I took the plunge on a "real" bike light, and I'm glad I did.
For urban riding, the MiNewt.300 USB is excellent. I didn't really know what 300 lumens looked like before I bought it, but now I know it's very sufficient. I can ride confidently into pitch-black corners of my town. It so happens that there are stretches of bike roads in my city which are unlit --but they are no longer "off limits" when I have this light. Even the bums congratulate me on this light. And cars see me well in advance as my 'cone' of light casts well ahead of me, announcing my presence visually. This makes me feel so much safer in urban environments.
I've ridden with this in thick fog and even rain and so far, so good.
Why four stars? There is work to be done in the realm of battery life. I realized this when I had it burn out even though it was sitting around for a few days, not being used -or-charged. Now I leave it plugged in basically whenever I'm at home. But I think, in this age of iPhones that don't require charging for days unless they are used heavily, we need our bike lights to catch up. So kudos to the maker of the MiNewt.300 USB ...but let's get a nice robust battery that doesn't fade when the light isn't even being used. It's one thing to get us longer in-use lifespan --which of course we can always have more and more and more --but I need to be confident I can leave the battery lying around without being so nervous that it might burn out if I have to leave on a spur-of-the-moment trip.
Otherwise, GREAT LIGHT !
UPDATE: So, I read the instructions. (Weird how that might help?!) They suggest simply leaving the light unplugged from the battery pack when not in use. I'll try to do this from now on and see how the battery life is affect. BTW: Would be nice to at least have a PDF instruction sheet rather than a low-res JPG. The latter is kind of hard to read.
UPDATE Part II: Almost a year later, I want to point out that I've had many contacts with NiteRider via email regarding various things, general questions, etc. And each and every time they are super cool and accommodating. I've actually got a few NiteRider lights now (the new USB Lumina series is GREAT) and I feel confident this is a company that listens to its customers. In fact, I went ahead and made this a five-star review...!
