This is almost the perfect bike light. Its small, its lightweight, it has 3 power modes and a separate flashing mode. The brightest mode is super-bright. It clips on and off the bike without tools. It charges with its own charger or via any USB port. The beam pattern is very smooth - brightest in the middle with plenty of run-off around the edges for side visibility.
The highest power is too bright for general road use - you can easily blind an oncoming car or cyclist. I use the high power only when I'm alone on dirt trails or a very dark road with no traffic. Here in Australia, we run into kangaroos at night - I guess like North Americans run into deer. This light gives ample warning of roos in complete darkness. When commuting on roads with streetlights, or on bike paths, I use either the middle or low settings - still plenty bright and much longer burn time. The flashing mode is perfect for daytime use. Even in bright sunshine, the flash mode gets you noticed on the roads - its that bright.
Two things I can think of to improve it for commuter use: 1. a 360 degree light ring for side visibility and 2. a beam pattern that focuses more light on the road, and less up at drivers, similar to car headlights. These beam patterns are now standard on European bike lights.
I have been using this light day and night throughout our (just-finishing) Australian winter. Because its bright, because its easy to remove, charge and replace, because I don't have to remember spare batteries or a charger, I find that I am never out of charge and I am using my light more. That alone increases my safety. Cars give me noticeably more respect and room - they actually give way to me more often when my light is on.
Just a few months ago, a light this good for this price would have been unbelievable. Get it before the northern winter catches you without.
